A Ruby Anniversary

It’s hard to believe that Ron and I are celebrating 40 years of marriage this coming Sunday. We were married here in San Antonio not long after we were graduated from college. The following year we made the first of many moves for work that took us to Dallas, then to  Iowa,  Austin, San Diego, Columbus, and finally six years ago, back here to to SA. The city has changed tremendously in the last 40 years. And so have we. Some years have been easy, others tremendously difficult but we’re still here, and headed to the beach this weekend for a long celebratory weekend that will include a gourmet dinner and plenty of beach time, our favorite way to decompress.

searchAccording to the people at Hallmark the 40th anniversary is the “ruby” year and I’m to wait another 20 years for the “diamond” anniversary. Some of the other years are funny–the 10th is the “tin” year, and the 5th is “wood.” For  many years, I usually received a piece of jewelry, but as the years pass,  I’m more appreciative of simpler gifts–the gift of time, of health, of laughter.

Although. If he were to present me with a ruby this weekend, I wouldn’t say no.

What’s the best or funniest or most unusual anniversary gift you’ve ever received?
