The Golden Age of Vinyl

Everything old is new again, said Jonathan Swift. And possibly Churchill. And Twain.

I hope you’re enjoying the last days of summer. This season has flown by, as I’ve been immersed in writing a new novel set in 1956, smack in the middle of the heyday of vinyl records. If you’re of a certain age, you may remember Saturdays hanging out at your favorite record store, browsing stacks of new vinyl LP albums, donning headphones to get the full effect of your favorite band or your favorite heartthrob singer.

For my protagonist Sheriff Hutch Joyner, who came of age listening to the big bands, the rock n roll music of the fifties, personified by artists like Chick Berry, Bill Haley, and Elvis is a mystery. But not as great a mystery as who is responsible for the two murders that have turned his quiet little town upside down.

My new Inside Story substack post dropped last night. If you enjoy tidbits from history you might enjoy reading an exceedingly brief history of vinyl records during the heyday of recorded music.

Wishing you a lovely week filled with your favorite music.
